It’s worth noting, to start with, that this is an Air conditioner and not an Air cooler. The latter of which requires you to fill it with Ice or cold water every couple of hours, to achieve a temperature drop of around 6 degrees.

Air Conditioners on the other hand use a refrigerant compressor, like in a car, to convert the warm air in the room into an ice cold blast. Temperature drops of 10 degrees C are possible. The downside to this however, is the need to “vent” the warm air generated out of the room.

The Amcor comes with a 5ft vent hose, which can be poked out of an open

door or window, to give maximum effect. The unit comes with some foam adaptors to keep exposure to the outside to a minimum. after all, you want to keep the cool air in the room!

I won’t lie and say the unit is whisper quiet in operation, as is has the hum of a fridge combined with the blast of a fan. However, if you use it to “pre-cool” a bedroom, or have it running at low speed in the front room, the noise won’t be an issue.

The controls are extremely simple, with an “on/off” button, combined with a “fan only” button and variable temperature and fan speed controls.

The unit features an LCD display, showing the current room temperature, and changes to show your chosen temperature when you press the up or down buttons. The lowest temperature on the dial is a comfortable 18 degrees. Depending on how hot your room is, this is the temperature the machine will strive to achieve.

In our store, the unit struggles. There are too many TV’s on, the door is open and the lighting alone runs to 3kw. However, in the home, the difference is huge, making the evenings more than bearable.

In particularly humid conditions, the Amcor also acts as a dehumidifier, and will bring the humidity in a room down dramatically. As a result, there is a water chamber that will need emptying every few days. A simple task with the aid of the kit included.

Four Castor’s mean its easy to move around, but bear in mind, for storage, its really quite heavy.

So, in summary (or should that be summerery? ;) ) it’s an extremely effective way of cooling the home, with a running cost of around 6p an hour. A must have for young children or the elderly.
