Well, the first thing I’d suggest would be to have a quick look at the filter in your existing extractor (hood). If it hasn’t been cleaned or changed for a while it could be causing the problem. Many Smeg hoods have a metal mesh-look filter which can usually be cleaned simply by putting it in the dishwasher, otherwise it will have a paper filter which should be replaced and cost under a fiver.

If your filters are clean, it could simply be that the hood isn’t powerful enough. You’re off to a good start by venting it outside, as this is far more efficient than recirculating the air back into the kitchen. If you’re looking to replace your current hood, look carefully at the specification of the ones you’re considering and check the airflow rate. This is generally rated in cubic metres of air extracted every hour, and of course a higher number is better. The extraction rate can vary wildly and is just as important when choosing a hood as the design of it.
