Do I need Full HD television set?
Tuesday, 30 Jun 2009 ~ Posted by Mook
In a word – No
I’d say “Do you WANT Full HD?” is perhaps a more appropriate question. If you are only going to be watching ordinary Freeview TV, or Sky, perhaps the odd DVD, then you simply don’t NEED a Full HD set. Even Sky HD only needs an “HD Ready” television to get the best out of it, and DVDs and Freeview will look just as good – if not slightly better – on a HD ready Television.
However, if you are a BIG movie fan (or your kids have one of the latest games consoles) then you should consider a Full HD set. They are essential if you’re planning on buying films on the latest Blu-Ray format, for example. Granted, you have to buy a Blu-ray player for between £200 and £300 – unless your children have a Playstation 3, which does the same job – but if you are interested in Blu-Ray, a 1080p Full HD television will certainly help you get the best possible picture quality from those films.
Perhaps more important for the average television viewer is a feature called “100Hz” (“Hertz”, or higher), offering a smoother picture. THIS is what really improves television pictures and brings movies and sports alive, yet it is often overlooked. And unlike Full HD, it applies to every single thing you’ll watch on your new TV.
So, in summary.
For watching Flog It – HD Ready, non-100hz.
For watching the football, your favourite DVDs and older games consoles – HD Ready with the “100Hz” system.
And for the movie buff, or Gran Turismo obsessed, really you need Full HD AND “100Hz”…
We would NEVER recommend you buy a Full HD Television that doesn’t have the “100Hz” feature, and it’s this advice which needs to be heeded the most. It doesn’t matter how good a static image looks on a full HD television, unless it’s “100hz”, it’ll all go to pot when the action starts. We’ve all seen that distracting blurred “trail” behind a moving object on some of the modern sets, and that’s what the “100Hz” system eliminates…
